A group of Tickenham WI members attended the Yeo Valley Group Meeting at Yatton Rugby Club on 22nd April. It was a lovely evening with the entertainment being Flamenco.
The guitarist was amazing, his fingers were almost a blur they moved so fast. Our performer and teacher Aneta, taught us how to clap! Who knew that we didn’t know how to get different sounds? We were also taught some beautiful hand movements, together with the history of Flamenco and discovered that it came over to Southern Spain with Indian Roma people.
Aneta told us that initially the Roma were shunned by society, but over the years they were accepted into the community and it’s amazing to realise that the dance eventually became synonymous with Spain.
After the perfomance tea and coffee were served and some gorgeous-looking homemade cakes.
During the business part of the meeting, each WI stood and summarised their highlights from the previous 12 months. It was fascinating hearing what the other WI’s got up to! Our rep delivered our highlights – the biggest being our 100th birthday party. The competition was any craft or art with a Flamenco theme and our entry and photos of the evening can be seen below. All in all, a very enjoyable evening.
Thanks to the performer Aneta Skut and her talented guitarist and to Tessa for the words and pictures, Those include the card shown below, from which the image above is taken.
