Long and Dedicated Service Recognised

June Smith of Tickenham WI was the winner of the Avon Federation WI 2026 Chairman’s Rose Bowl award. We are very proud of her.

June has spent many years giving exceptional service to both Tickenham WI and her wider community. Her contribution has never been motivated by recognition or reward; rather, it stems from a lifelong commitment to helping others and making a positive difference wherever she can.

Within Tickenham WI, June has been a dedicated committee member for many years, undertaking numerous roles including President and Secretary. She has approached every role with energy, enthusiasm and a determination to ensure the WI continues to thrive. Her leadership, organisational skills and willingness to take responsibility have been invaluable to our members.

What makes June’s contribution even more remarkable is that, in her tenth decade, she continues to be one of the most active members of our WI. While many people would understandably be taking life a little easier, June shows no sign of slowing down. She is often among the first to arrive at meetings, helping to set out the hall, arrange tables and chairs and ensure everything is ready for members. At the end of the afternoon, she is equally likely to be found stacking chairs and clearing away with the enthusiasm and energy of someone many years younger. She simply never stands by when there is a job to be done.

June’s commitment to caring for others is equally inspiring. She is a passionate supporter of kidney-related charities, raising funds in a variety of ways, including collecting used stamps. She has similarly supported Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support over many years. The annual Ploughman’s Lunches, now a valued tradition, began as charity events hosted in June’s own garden, raising funds for Cancer Research UK.

Beyond the WI, June is an active member of Wraxall Church and the Mothers’ Union, helping with flower arranging, coffee mornings and fundraising lunches. She provides transport for those who can no longer drive, visits friends, neighbours and WI members, helps with shopping and offers companionship and practical support wherever it is needed. She also plays a key role in organising and catering for local community events and celebrations.

June’s kindness, dedication and tireless service have touched countless lives. She embodies everything the WI stands for: friendship, community, leadership and service. Her contribution over many years has been truly outstanding, making her a most deserving recipient of the AFWI Chairman’s Rose Bowl.

With thanks to Tessa Morrison for the text from her nomination of June for the award.
