Tickenham WI recently welcomed representatives from the Claverham, Clevedon and District branch of Guide Dogs for a fascinating and heartwarming afternoon. Two volunteer puppy trainers brought along the young dogs currently in their care — a striking black German Shepherd and a friendly Golden Retriever — giving members the chance to learn more about the early stages of guide dog training.
The volunteers explained how puppies are cared for in family homes from around eight weeks old until they are ready to begin their formal guide dog training at around 14 months. During this time, the puppies are introduced to everyday sights, sounds and experiences, helping them develop the confidence and good behaviour needed for their future roles supporting people with sight loss.
Members enjoyed hearing about the dedication involved in puppy raising, the training process, and the life-changing work carried out by Guide Dogs. The visit was both informative and enjoyable, with the two young dogs proving to be very popular guests.
